When you hear the name Double Trouble, most immediately think of the rhythm section for Stevie Ray Vaughan. But since the passing of Stevie, Double Trouble have backed several other artists. Notable would be Debbie Davies, and the album "Tales From The Austin Motel."
The main thing is, this is an incredible release. Double Trouble's Tommy Shannon & Chris Layton backing guitarists Doyle Bramhall II, Jimmie Vaughan, Eric Johnson, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Susan Tedeschi, and Willie Nelson; keys handled by Reese Wynans, Charlie Sexton, & Dr. John; vocalists like many of the above and more: Jonny Lang & Lou Ann Barton. Lesser known but not lesser vocalist Malford Milligan, guitarists Van Wilks, Denny Freeman and Gordie Johnson. A veritable who's who of blues and musicians.
Shannon and Layton co-wrote five of the eleven tunes on this release, and covers of tunes by Muddy Waters, Johnny 'Guitar' Watson and Led Zeppelin appear.
I certainly like this type of release. A killer rhythm section, different guitarists and vocalists throughout, different influences abound. Susan Tedeschi rockin' hard on Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll," Lou Ann Barton's soft and sexy voice with Jimmie Vaughan's guitar tone and vocals on "In The Middle Of The Night." Doyle Bramhall II's crying guitar on "Say One Thing." Rock solid bass & skins all the way through. Blues at its finest.
"In making this record, we would like to extend our deepest heartfelt love and gratitude to our dearest friend, Stevie Ray Vaughan, who has been, and always will be, a continuing source of inspiration. He was our mentor, our friend, and our brother. We miss him. …… We hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed making it." Double Trouble
You will.
